Early European settlers apparently chewed it to help ward of tooth decay. Recommended for body specific issues, wintergreen is cited in modern texts as a herbal remedy for arthritis. The plant and its oil are reported to have a range of healing actions including analgesic and astringent properties which support its use for painful conditions that benefit from enhanced blood circulation, ie. joint and muscle problems.
